Microsoft 365

Reconnect Microsoft 365 on macOS

Remove an old organisation account from Outlook and Office, then sign in cleanly with the final Microsoft 365 account.

Before you begin

1. Remove the old account from Outlook

  1. Open Outlook for Mac.
  2. Select Tools > Accounts.
  3. Select the old work account.

Choose Manage > Remove Account, then confirm. In Legacy Outlook, select the minus symbol and choose Sign Out.

2. Sign Office out

  1. Open Word or Excel.
  2. Use the application menu or account menu to sign out.

For example, select Word > Sign Out when that option is shown.

  3. Quit every Microsoft app.

Use Command-Q for Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams and OneDrive rather than only closing their windows.

  4. Restart the Mac.

3. Activate Office with the correct account

  1. Open Word.

    Select Sign in.

  2. Enter the final work email address.

Choose Work or school account if Microsoft asks which account type to use.

  3. Enter the current password and approve MFA.
  4. Open Outlook and add the same final email address.

If Office still redirects to the old organisation

Use Microsoft's Office licence removal tool

This removes all Microsoft 365 for Mac licence information from the Mac. You must have the correct final account credentials before running it, and macOS may request a local administrator password.

  1. Quit all Office apps.
  2. Open Microsoft's licence removal instructions.

Download and run the official package from the Microsoft page below.

  3. Restart the Mac.
  4. Open Word and activate only with the final work email address.
  5. Open Outlook and add the mailbox again.

Reconnect OneDrive separately

Office sign-out does not sign OneDrive out. Select the OneDrive cloud icon in the menu bar, open Settings or Preferences > Account, and choose Unlink this Mac only when your organisation has instructed you to reconnect it. Sign back in with the final work address.

Stop and contact support if Microsoft replaces the final email address with an unfamiliar onmicrosoft.com address, repeatedly displays the previous organisation, or the Mac licence removal tool does not complete.
